The PL-600 exam, also known as the Microsoft Power Platform Solution Architect exam, is the main requirement for those aiming to earn the Microsoft Certified: Power Platform Solution Architect Expert certification.
Note: as of the time of writing this article, to become a certified solution architect, you must also have passed either PL-200 or PL-400, as well as the PL-600 exam.
This certification targets experienced solution architects who design and implement solutions that capitalize on the capabilities of Microsoft Power Platform, ensuring these solutions meet business requirements and maximize efficiency.
According to Microsoft, candidates for the PL-600 exam should have a deep understanding of Power Platform services, an ability to design solutions by integrating Power Platform with other technologies, and a knack for translating business requirements into secure, scalable, and reliable solutions.
In this guide, we’ll navigate through a tailored learning path, highlight essential video tutorials, and share insightful articles and blogs to aid you in passing the PL-600 exam.

Skills Measured Explained
Before delving into the study materials, let’s break down the skills assessed in the PL-600 exam:
For those aiming to conquer the PL-600 exam, understanding the specifics of the skills measured is crucial. Here’s a refined look at each skill area:
- Perform Solution Envisioning and Requirement Analysis (35–40%)
This section is one of the two big sections that are measured in this exam, which assesses your ability to effectively gather and analyze business requirements to design a comprehensive Power Platform solution.
You need to excel in engaging with stakeholders to extract clear and actionable requirements, perform gap analysis, and propose high-level solution architectures that align with business objectives.
The ability to translate business processes and requirements into technical solutions while identifying potential challenges and integration needs with existing systems is crucial (and its basically what a solution architect does).
This part of the exam tests your understanding of the strategic aspects of solution design, emphasizing the importance of a thorough requirements analysis in crafting successful Power Platform solutions.
- Architect a Solution (40–45%)
This is the largest component of the exam, this section focuses on your ability to design a solution architecture that leverages Power Platform to meet complex business needs.
It requires deep knowledge of Power Platform services, including Power Apps, Power Automate, Power BI, and Power Virtual Agents (now called Copilot studio), and how these can be integrated with each other and with external systems to create a seamless and efficient solution.
You should demonstrate their skills in designing data models, security models, and integration strategies. This includes selecting appropriate components and services, planning for scalability and extensibility, and ensuring that the solution adheres to principles of security, data governance, and compliance. A strong grasp of architectural principles and best practices is essential to excel in this area.
- Implement the Solution (15–20%)
This final section evaluates your practical skills in guiding the implementation of the designed solution, from initial setup and configuration to deployment and beyond. It covers the hands-on aspects of configuring Power Platform environments, managing data policies, implementing security configurations, and overseeing the deployment of solution components.
Understanding how to apply best practices for solution customization, automation, and integration is key. Additionally, candidates must be skilled in troubleshooting and optimizing solution performance to ensure that the implemented solution meets the original design specifications and business requirements effectively.
Study Roadmap
Now that you understand what the skills the exam measures is all about, let’s take a look at a couple of resources you can use to prepare for the exam.
Step 1: Watch the exam preparation video by goms tech talks
This 20 minute long video is a great way to start prepping for the PL-600 exam. Goms goes over and explains all the different concepts and skills the exam measures, as well as show practical examples of how these concepts are used in real life scenarios.
The video is fairly fresh (published in November 2023) and in my opinion covers a lot of the topics that will come on the exam.
Step 2: Go through the Microsoft Learn modules for the exam
This is one of the steps that I recommend in every study guide I create. The Microsoft Learn material is a fantastic resource to use when preparing for this exam for 2 major reasons:
1. Always up to date: As we all know, Microsoft loves to add, change and deprecated features all the time, and these changes are also reflected in their exams. Microsoft Learn does a great job of keeping its information fresh and up-to-date, since its written by the people that make these changes.
This means you’re always learning the newest stuff, which will definitely help out in the exam.
2. You can use it in the exam itself: What’s really cool about Microsoft Learn is that you can use it while you’re taking certain exams. Yes, you can actually look stuff up during the test, but only in the Microsoft learn material.
This means that getting to know how the Microsoft learn material is put together, and where you can find the different information that you might need during the exam is crucial.
You can check out the Microsoft learn material here, you will find it when you scroll down about half way through the page. Once you have gone through it, move on to the next step.
Step 3: Take the practice Assessment for Exam PL-600
This step I add in every single certification exam guide that I put out, simply because of how great it is and the fact that it’s free.
The Practice Assessment for PL-600 is a great tool to use to measure how ready you are for the real exam. This is another resource provided by Microsoft that’s specifically made for each exam and gives the users the experience of how it’s gonna be when doing the actual exam.
It’s a series of 50 questions that are similar to the ones that show on the exam. You have no time-limit during this one, so I recommend that you set a timer for about 1 hour to see how far you get through the questions.
Keep in mind that unlike the actual exam, this practice assessment does not include labs or case studies, which almost always show up on the actual exam, but its still one of the best resources to use when studying for PL-600.
If you pass the assessment and feel ready to book the exam, then it’s time to give it a shot, if not, then go through steps 1 and 2 again.
NOTE: You can only do the exam about 5 times PER YEAR, and there is a waiting period after the 3rd attempt, so do not spam it. If you failed the first try, study again and study harder to make sure to pass it on the second try.
best of luck with the exam!
